Once again, the Netanyahu government has crossed a line that should unify the world against state-led impunity. The MV Madleen, a British-registered vessel carrying humanitarian aid and crewed by international activists, including Greta Thunberg and an EU parliamentarian, has been illegally boarded in international waters by Israeli forces. The ship is now being towed against the will of its crew and passengers to the port of Ashdod. This is not conduct befitting a 'security operation'; it's naval kidnapping: piracy plain and simple.
This is a war crime against a humanitarian expedition.
Defence Minister Israel Katz has announced that the ship is "on its way to Ashdod", and that once there, "all passengers will be made to watch footage of Hamas’s 7 October attacks" . This is textbook humiliation: psychological warfare aimed at humanitarian activists. In any event, what is this meant to achieve, whatever the atrocities of October 7th, this does not excuse the wholesale salughter of children and teh starvation and dehoming of 2 million people. Official statements from the Israeli Defence and Foreign Ministries paint the raid as a 'necessary precaution'. A Jerusalem Post dispatch regarding the sister 'Madleen' flotilla emphasised the same messaging: 'IDF intercepts Gaza flotilla… passengers expected to watch Oct. 7 footage' jpost.com+1jpost.com+1. Israeli officials have repeatedly framed these solidarity missions as provocations, ignoring the violation of maritime sovereignty.
In a statement yesterday Israelz" Kat called the flotilla supporters of HAMAS and antisemites" and it’s time to say it clearly: the knee-jerk smears of antisemitism and support for Hamas are increasingly being used as political deflection tactics, not good-faith arguments. These accusations are not just wearing thin, they’re actively undermining real conversations about war crimes, collective punishment, and international law. Criticising Israel's government or military actions, especially when they involve the bombing of civilians, starvation blockades, or the kidnapping of aid workers, is not antisemitism. It is a moral obligation in any democratic society. Pretending otherwise does a disservice to the fight against actual antisemitism, which is a real and dangerous problem. As for Hamas: rejecting Israel’s illegal occupation, apartheid policies, or war crimes does not mean you support Hamas. The idea that one must choose between uncritical support of the Israeli government or allegiance to Hamas is a false binary designed to silence dissent. This tired rhetoric only survives in a vacuum of accountability. And that vacuum is beginning to close.
WHY THIS MATTERSI
Israel does not have the moral right to use 7 October as an all-purpose shield to justify mass suffering in Gaza. The ongoing blockade, bombing campaigns, and starvation of nearly two million people—many of them children—are collective punishment crimes under international law.
Keir Starmer and the UK Government have so far issued statements of concern, but nothing that resonates with the scale of this outrage. No sanctions. No shipping bans. No real accountability.
Israel’s messages? Bluster and intimidation. Katz’s remarks now affirm that even British vessels can't traverse international waters without fear of state seizure.
Israel is weaponising the sea to terrorise solidarity activists, blatantly breaking international maritime law, and redrawing rules with brute force. If the UK government fail to escalate this through diplomacy, UN enforcement, or legal action, they will have effectively surrendered our maritime sovereignty and ordinary humanitarian rights to the dictates of a foreign military.
What should happen
This operation is not security, it’s intimidation, plain and simple. It is piracy, kidnapping, and a chilling extension of collective punishment. This is not vengeance; it's state violence masquerading as maritime control. And if the UK’s institutions continue to respond with muted words rather than principled action, they’re complicit, not just in covering up this crime, but in normalising it.
Our government has a clear and urgent obligation to the occupants of the MV Madleen. This is a British-flagged vessel, carrying international civilians, including at least one EU lawmaker, on a peaceful humanitarian mission. Its illegal seizure in international waters is not just a violation of maritime law; it is a direct affront to British sovereignty. The UK has a duty to protect its citizens, its flagged ships, and the principles of international law. To remain silent while a foreign military kidnaps passengers from a British vessel is an abdication of responsibility, a cowardly retreat from the basic standards of diplomatic protection and human rights.
